Visiting Cambridge, England

September 25th, 2009

With a 2001 population of 109,000, Cambridge lies in the East of England region about 50 miles north of London. Dating back to the ninth century, William the Conqueror built a castle here in 1068, and the famous Cambridge University was formed in the 13th century.

Although the city is now very much on the cutting edge of technology, it is still characterized best by its medieval buildings, with the colleges King’s College Chapel and the Cambridge University Library dominating the skyline. The Famous 1874 Cavendish Laboratory is also a magnificent university building. This historic university quarter is best appreciated from a section of the River Cam known as The Backs, where you can take a river tour or go punting (a punt is a flat-bottomed boat propelled with a pole) for the day.

The University has many excellent museums associated with it, most notably the Neoclassical Fitzwilliam, which is often referred to as “the finest small museum in Europe”. The university also has a wonderful botanical garden which has been open to the public since 1846.

The University atmosphere and products has resulted in the city becoming a technological leader, earning it the nickname of Silicon Fen. One fifth of Cambridge’s population are students, so if you want to move about the city a bit more easily, visit in July and August. There will be many tourists, but all in all it will be easier to get around. One place you may want to visit is Grantchester, which is a charming riverside village. Also, Cambridge is home to many wonderful bridges, and a walk along the river will reveal the unusual Queens’ Mathematical Bridge, as well as its oldest bridge, the 1630 Clare College as well as its most famous St. Johns Bridge.

Venice with unique softness

September 23rd, 2009

Venice carries this unique sadness of the world and is not short of having the most elegant scenery in the history of the Mediterranean Sea. Most importantly, it is the bridge between the east and the west. This world-famous city, located in the northeast of Italy, was built in the fifth century.

Venice is four kilometers away from the mainland, on the one hundred and eighteen islands which belong to the Venice Lake. Over one hundred and fifty canals and four hundred bridges go on length and breadth and connect all these islands into a whole city. Venice becomes the most attractive city of tour for its unique appearance and abundant storehouse of art. The beauty of Venice lies in the green water, the groggy boats and the magnificent buildings of classical style. Looking around when standing on the St Mark’s Square, the cross streets change into sinuous canals here. The vehicle which runs freely in other common cities changes into boats here. Every channel, every street, every chapel and every small square are the scenery and record the brilliant culture and history of this water city.

St Mark’s Square is regarded as the most romantic Square. Birds of peace are the most important scenery here.

Waterloo Bridge connects the two buildings of the court and the prison. Generally speaking, the prisoners in this prison will not come out, alive. Waterloo Bridge becomes the last place where they can have a look at the sunshine. Thus, the prisoners can not help sighing when they pass by. As time passes, this place is called “Waterloo Bridge”. Palazzo Ducale was the tiptop power department in the republic time of Venice. It is typically Gothic style with marble walls of pink color, continuous needle arches and round windows of pattern of four petals.

Saint Mark’s Cathedral, with strong Byzantine’s style, is said that it is a Cathedral which makes offerings to the author of the Gospel. Saint Mark is the guardian spirit of Venice and the symbol is lion. So lion is also the symbol of Venice. On both sides of Saint Mark’s Cathedral are the old and new administrator mansions of which the first floor is mostly used for cafes of which the most famous one is Cafe Florian. It is said that Hemingway and Byron often come here. Of course, the coffee here is the most expensive in Italy.

South Kruger Park: the real Africa

September 22nd, 2009

Tours to Kruger National Park are best undertaken during the dry winter season. Viewing wildlife is more rewarding as the vegetation is less dense and animals congregate around the waterholes to drink every morning and evening. The days are also milder and more temperate. Because this is the most popular season, be prepared to share your sightings with other motorists. However, between October and March, when summer rains transform the surroundings into a flowering paradise, the park is alive with baby antelope and migratory birds. The dense foliage hides game, and the malaria risk is at its highest.

Kruger National Park accommodation offers luxury lodges, from which an African safari is best appreciated. Nothing can adequately prepare one for the majesty of the bush and the beauty of the vistas. Rangers are experienced field guides and have an excellent knowledge of the bush – better than anyone. Your ranger will track the Big Five (Leopard, Rhino, Elephant, Buffalo, and Lion) during game drives and bush walks. In-between the tracking of the Big Five, a variety of other wildlife will be found in the dense bush. Like the Botswana Delta, the south Kruger Park is a birdwatcher’s paradise, with over 500 species of birds. Kruger National Park also boasts over 100 species of reptile, including approximately 3000 crocodiles.

A map of Kruger National Park reveals that there are 21 rest camps to choose from, several of which have satellite camps. A number of private lodges, such as Skukuza, Grand Kruger Lodge and Lower Sabie, also operate within the park. These lodges offer air-conditioning, superb accommodation, exquisite cuisine and unequalled hospitality.

However, the fantastic wildlife is only one of the numerous reasons to visit the Kruger Park. Kruger National Park is the location of over 250 historical and cultural sites. Some of these sites date back to the early Stone Age and are over a million years old
